Concurrent User Stress Simulator for Cognos 8
NewComp Solutions Inc.
Overview
Newcomp's "Concurrent User Stress Simulator” (CUSS) is a Java application designed to simulate the heavy usage and demands a Cognos 8 environment will experience when accessed by multiple users. CUSS was developed with the goal of allowing Cognos clients to verify a given environment's ability to support the user's demands and provide acceptable performance – all prior to production rollout. CUSS can also be used post-rollout to help troubleshoot Cognos 8 environments that are failing to perform as expected.
Companies invest a huge amount of time and money in their Business Intelligence systems. System failures and poor performance are embarrassing for project sponsors, lead to a loss of credibility and hinder user acceptance. Many issues have simple resolutions – but only once they are identified. CUSS aims to avoid unpleasant surprises by identifying issues PRIOR to rollout.
Features and Benefits
CUSS works by creating multiple parallel processes from a single Windows or UNIX machine. Each process independently connects to Cognos 8 through shared or individualized security credentials. These processes mimic independent users and execute a specified list of tasks such as retrieving Content Store content, retrieving a report specification, or running a report. These tasks are executed by each of the parallel processes in a random fashion in order to closely simulate actual user activity. The resulting log files and executed task outputs are then audited with the goal of identifying issues or bottlenecks.
A GUI interface allows the administrator to control CUSS as it stress tests the Cognos 8 system.
Architecture
CUSS communicates with the Cognos 8 environment via a gateway or a dispatcher URL. It is written in Java JDK 1.5 (Netbeans 5.5) using IBM Cognos 8.4 SDK Java libraries.
It is compatible with IBM Cognos 8 versions 8.1 and up.
